Drvenik is a small picturesque town located under the steep cliffs of Biokovo mountain. Its name was first mentioned in the 13th century, and the remains of an old settlement in Old Village still remind of that time. There is a large number of historical and archeological sites in Drvenik amongst which Gradina fort, the Church of St George from the 14th century, Kostanića greb – a monument to a tragic love from the 15th century, and the path over Biokovo mountain, where Alberto Fortis copied Hasanaginica. After the earthquake of 1962 the residents of Drvenik moved from the village in the foothill of Biokovo (Old Village) to the coastline and into the two sunny bays: Donja (Lower) and Gornja (Upper) Vala. For those seeking peace and quiet, the old village has become an idyllic place of untouched beauty, olive orchards, and a spectacular view. With its promenade stretching over several kilometers, miles of pebble beaches with crystal clear sea, observation points, sports and recreation facilities, and marked mountain trails, Drvenik has quickly become a favourite tourist spot. In addition, there is the delicious cuisine and a diverse programme of ‘Cultural and Entertaining Summer’, which will make visitors not only enjoy themselves but also want to come back the next summer.
