Krapina, mentioned for the first time in 1193



Krapina, mentioned for the first time in 1193  is located in Zagorje Region. In the 14th century Krapina was a free royal trading place and a residence of the Croatian governor until the end of the 15th century. Krapina is best known for the remains belonging to Neanderthals, found by an archaeologist and a paleontologist Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger (1856 – 1936) in a cave on a hill called Hušnjakovo near Krapina in 1899. Today, in front of the cave there are reconstructions of pre-historic men and animals. There is the Evolution Museum opened on the site with a permanent exhibition.
