It is a theatre, an opera and a ballet house operated by the Ministry of Culture. Neo-baroque building was designed by the two Viennese architects Ferdinand Helmer and Hermann Fellner. At that time, they were famous for the design of several representative theatres and concert houses. Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph I (1830 – 1916) opened the theatre on 14 October 1895. The Croatian National Theatre is the central theatre house in Croatia and the leading Croatian actors and directors have worked here. In front of the entrance there is a fountain called ” The Well of Life”, designed by a Croatian artist and sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883 – 1962) in 1905.
